James "Jim" Holden went into civilian life hoping for a peaceful and uneventful life after being dishonorably discharged for assaulting a superior officer trying to prevent a civilian casualty incident.
The Vanduul attack on Vega changed all that, the Empire by special dispensation recalled Holden back to service due to the state of the war and the empire's need for experienced officers to lead the charge against the enemy.
Now in command of the Warship Rocinante, Capt. Holden finds himself fighting to turn the tide of the war in the Empire's favor and finally push back the relentless and merciless Vanduul once and for all.
