Welcome to 92nd East India Trading Squadron. We will deliver.
No. 92 Squadron, also known as No 92 (East India) Squadron, of the Royal Air Force was formed as part of the Royal Flying Corps at London Colney as a fighter squadron on 1 September 1917. It deployed to France in July 1918 and saw action for just four months, until the end of the war. During the conflict it flew both air superiority and direct ground support missions. It was disbanded at Eil on 7 August 1919. Reformed on 10 October 1939, the unit was supposed to be equipped with medium bombers but in the spring of 1940 it became one of the first RAF units to receive the Supermarine Spitfire. No. 92 Sqn served in every theatre of the second world war and was also the top scoring allied fighter squadron at the time.
The Squadron received the F4 Sabre in February 1954 becoming part of the only Sabre wing in fighter command, before getting the Hawker hunter in 1956. In 1960 the Squadron was chosen as Fighter Commands official aerobatic Squadron, adopting the name Blue Diamonds.
In December 1965 the Squadron was relocated to RAF Germany at RAF Gutersloh. There they remained until disbanded in March 1977.
92 Squadron was reformed in April 1977 as a Phantom air defence unit at RAF Wildenrath still under the Command of RAF Germany.
Following the fall of the Berlin wall the Squadron again disbanded in July 1991. In 1992 the Squadron was again reformed as part of No. 7 Flying Training School for weapons training, but was again disbanded in September 1994.
In November 2008 the Tactics and Training Wing of the Air Warfare Centre became 92 Squadron.
In 2160 after the successful Terraforming of Mars, decendents of former 92 Squadron pilots, each well established combat pilots in their own right, formed the 92 East India Trading Squadron to make re-supply runs between Earth and the burgeoning Mars colony. The frontier area was considered dangerous due to the prevalence of affordable ships from RSI available to all and sundry. The military experience of pilots in the Squadron meant that losses due to piracy were much lower than in rival courier companies.
In the mid 2200’s 92 Squadron expanded its cargo runs to mirror the exploration and subsequent colonisation of the Solar System. As the deeper space runs were still considered dangerous the company kept its ethos that pilots needed combat training and experience to keep them in good stead with whatever, and whoever, they would encounter.
Early 2300 hearalded an era of expansion for 92 Squadron. With the terraforming and mining of Croshaw well under way the Squadron fitted jump drives to the largest of their cargo vessels and with armed escorts in tow began making runs of resources and materiel between Sol and Croshaw systems. Again the experience of pilots was proven to be a boon, as the jump points were still relatively unknown phenomenon and passage through was highly dangerous and often deadly to less experienced pilots.
The Peace Accord signed between UNE and the Banu in 2348 enabled the 92 Squadron, slowly, to expand into the sphere of inter-species trade. Finding items of seemingly little worth to each species, and turning it into great profit at the other end of the run. “one man’s trash is anothers treasure” never seemed so true than at this time. Also at this time as jump points became more stable and easier to navigate, more of their courier ships were able to attempt runs. Profitability had never been so high.
In 2542 with the onset of the Tevarin War, and the subsequent draft, a large part of the Squadron opted to Military service and once again the 92 Squadron became a military outfit establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Not only did their pilots fight on the front lines of the war, but the still active trading arm continued to supply resources and ordinance to the embattled pilots.
After the war ended, the 92 Squadron was well placed with experienced pilots, unfortunately quite a few less than before the war, to quickly re-establish the trading runs that had been shut down during war-time. With planetary populations once more expanding there was a need to get resources and other materiel safely from one side of the UNE to the other.
