Arcanis Workers’ Syndicate was formed after the collapse of the Daymar Workers’ Union. While fledgling industries were being established on Daymar, the Union was inititally successful in protecting mine workers’ employment rights under UEE Common Law. After the UEE sold territorial and legal control of the Stanton system to Hurston Dynamics, Crusader Industries, ArcCorp and microTech; the Union struggled to settle negotiations with the corporations. The Union collapsed and groups of workers started to form syndicates to protect their interests and police the local territories.
While some of the Daymar syndicates strived to uphold UEE Common Law and Crusader corporate policy, others took advantage of the situation to set up blackmarket trading posts and illegal stashes. Those who adopted criminal activities grew in power and influence. One of the more successful syndicates controlled the deserts around Shubin Mining Facility, led by the ruthless Don Arcanis. The Arcanis syndicate expanded rapidly by absorbing, allying or outright annihilating smaller Daymar syndicates.
By the time DiMaggio Arcanis took control of the syndicate, there existed a balance of power between the established Daymar syndicates and the corporations that was held together by the fearsome reputation of the family name.
Unlike his father, DiMaggio was more entrepreneur than fearsome mob boss, overseeing the modernisation of the Arcanis Syndicate. Under his leadership the syndicate expanded legitimate business, with activities across a wide range of sectors, including mining, hauling, and PMC operations. In reality Arcanis still maintains strong links with criminal organisations and syndicates; DiMaggio’s Right-hand man, Tadgh O’Reilly, will orchestrate any job worth the risk that will run a profit, upholding the legacy of Don Arcanis.
The public facing front of Arcanis exists to support and protect the rights and interests of ‘Dusters’: the name given to the people of Daymar, specifically mining and industrial workers. Arcanis began by representing the Workers of Shubin Mining Facility by negotiating with Shubin Interstellar and Crusader Industries. In recent years this network has extended to pilots and crewmen operating from and around Daymar. This has seen Arcanis evolve from its roots in the industrial sector into a wider range of activities including haulage and PMC.
Arcanis operates legitimate business upholding UEE and corporate law, however it still maintains strong criminal links as one of the many crime syndicates of Daymar and undertakes a variety of illegitimate activities in the background.
While at times Arcanis operations may be seen to contribute to the rise of piracy and lawlessness around Crusader, overall it aims to be a stabilising factor in the region. Arcanis rivals other criminal organisations in the area such as the Nine Tails and actually seeks to promote general law and order to prevent further Crusader security outposts being established around Crusader’s moons, which may hinder Arcanis interests.
The Arcanis Syndicate commands a certain amount of fear and respect due to Donaldo’s ruthless leadership, however unlike his father, DiMaggio is more of an businessman and entrepreneur than criminal mastermind. The majority of illegitimate operations are left to DiMaggio’s Right-hand man, Tadgh O’Reilly. Tadgh and DiMaggio are as close as brothers and Tadgh runs Arcanis operations with full authority of the Arcanis family name.
